Mikhail Gorbachev was born march 2nd 1931 in privolnoye, soviet union into a Russian-Ukrainian family. During WWII his village was occupied by the Germans and was 14 when the war ended. Before he went to Moscow university to study law he worked as a combine operator. When Gorbachev left the university he became a full-time official of komsomol which is the communist youth organization. By 1960 he had become the top komsomol official in Stavropol and the next year he went to 22nd communist party congress in Moscow. Gorbachev kept working his way up and in 1985 Gorbachev was elected general secretary of the communist party. He started a campaign against corruption and alcoholism and wanted perestroika (restructuring) trying to make the soviet union more efficient. Gorbachev tried to introduce polices that create a market economy with private ownership of soviet industry but others who opposed this made sure that it was did not work. In 1987 Gorbachev met with Ronald Reagan to sign the immediate nuclear forces abolition treaty. He stopped soviet interference with other countries domestic policies and in 1989 he announced that troops would be withdrawn from Afghanistan. Gorbachev was awarded the Nobel peace prize in 1990. In 1991 a coup was started by Conservative to get rid of Gorbachev but he survived and disbanded the central committee. The soviet union then began breaking up into separate states and in 1995 Gorbachev resigned from office.
I think that Mikhail Gorbachev was the most important because he tried to make the soviet union more democratic. Gorbachev is one of the people that ended the cold war which was very important. He tried to help his country even though others tried to keep that from happening. With out Mikhail Gorbachev the soviet union would still be together and the cold war could have ended with nuclear war.
