What are U-boats?
Caleb, Jed, and David

U-boats used huge containers and filled them with water to sink. Then they empty the containers when they wanted to return to the surface

U-boats are a fascinating contraptions.  U-boats are submarines. WW1 was the first war U-boats were used. The Germans developed them, but the original design was thought of by Leonardo de Vinci. First, they were dangerous and unsuccessful but they slowly got more advantage. Later, in WW1, U-boats sunk 1.4 million tons of allied shipments. Eventually, they were used for stealth and destroying other vessels.

What weapons did they use?

Many different kinds of weapons were used during WW1. Mortars are similar to cannons, except that they are angled at a 45 degree angle allowing them to rain artillery down on the enemy trenches. The French 75mm field gun which took the spirit of the original cannon and flipped it. This cannon shot rapidly and was easy to aim. In addition to the French 75 mm field gun, another cannon was made, the falconet. The falconet was a small cannon that allowed a shotgun like shot, spreading small deadly fragments across the battlefield. First, there was only the flammenwerfer. However, it wasn't powerful enough to shoot very far, so then they developed another flamethrower, the grossflammenwerfer. It wasn't as portable, but it was very powerful.
