Thomas Alleyne's High School
Friday Roundup - 26th September 2014
On Wednesday evening Mrs Harris Head of English and her team held an English information evening for parents. This was well attended and you will be able to read more about English skills' classes in a future 'Round up'. As teachers, we appreciated the opportunity for parents to ask questions of us at this early stage in the year and also value the support that parents clearly want to offer.
Perhaps the most important question was not one about English but about all subjects. It was from a parent who wanted to access past papers to support her son in revising over the coming months. In order to do this she asked for an easy way to access the exam board and unit number for each subject. This information is available for all students on Frog. In order to see these revision materials, you would need to log on to Frog with either your own or your son/daughter's username. Then click on the resources icon in the iPhone section, then on resources and then revision. Each department has prepared resources for your son/daughter. However in conversation with parents, we also agreed that communicating exam boards through 'Round Up' was a good way forward. Please find under the links below, tables with all exam boards and unit codes so that you can download papers to practise.
Year 11 and 13 are very short academic years and it is important that students start preparing themselves for examinations early on.
We look forward to a successful year ahead and please do not hesitate to contact school if you have questions.
Finally I would like to congratulate Year 9 on the smooth transition they have made into our school. They are clearly focused and wish to make the very most of their time with us. It is superb to see so many of them getting involved in extra curricular events. Please remind them that at lunchtime our school library is open where they are welcome to go to read quietly if they wish.
National Poetry Day
National Poetry Day is a nationwide celebration of poetry that shakes poetry from its dust-jacket into the nations’ classrooms, streets, offices, shops, playgrounds, train stations and airwaves, through live events, happenings, classroom activities and spontaneous uncontrollable outbursts of poetry. As part of this celebration of poetry you are invited to a ‘Spooktacular’ Poetry Café to be held on Thursday 23rd October, between 6pm and 8 p.m at the school.
This is always an enjoyable evening and Governors, parents, family and friends are warmly invited to also be part of the audience. There is a small charge of a £1 per adult (accompanied children free) on the door. Tea, coffee and home made cakes will be on sale.
Music Tour 2015
The music department will be adding to the list of prestigious venues in which the school groups have performed, including the Basilica in Venice, Monserrat and Barcelona Cathedrals. The next planned tour will continue the tradition of offering pupils an amazing opportunity to perform in world class venues. In July 2015, the school choir will perform in New York, in beautiful cathedrals and be able to take part in Broadway workshops and perform alongside Broadway stars. Please see the music department PowerPoint on Frog for further details or see Mrs Todd for a letter. The deadline to sign up for the trip is Friday 3rd October. Please make sure you see Mrs Todd if you want to find out more about this exciting opportunity.

Fifteen year 10 students crammed into the back room of the Library at lunchtime on Friday for the inaugural meeting of the Upper School book group. There was an, at times heated, discussion when it came to choosing the next book, but everyone agreed that 'Down the Rabbit Hole' by Peter Abrahams was an excellent first choice to read. The next meeting will be Friday 17th October. Come along to the next meeting and join in the discussion. If you would like a copy of ' Down the Rabbit hole' before the next meeting see Mrs Shakespeare or Mrs Fisher
