Brief History

Nomadic herds people have occupied the territory now belonging to Djibouti for millennia.

The Issas and Afars, the nations two really big ethnic groups today, lived there when Arab traders introduced Islam to the area in the ninth century a.d.

Djibouti's main languages are French and Arabic but the most that is spoken are Somali and Afar.



500 grams flour

Meat Filling:
2 kilograms ground beef
5 onions, peeled and diced
3 green peppers, peeled and diced
Salt, pepper, and cumin, to taste
2 liters vegetable oil

  1. To prepare the dough, combine the flour with water and salt. Mix well, then form the dough into a ball and allow to rise.
  2. Sauté ground beef, onions, and peppers. Season to taste.
  3. Heat the vegetable oil to frying temperature. Roll dough out into a large circle, then cut into quarters.
  4. Put a heaping spoonful of meat onto each quarter and fold into triangles. Deep fry in oil and allow to cool before serving.
