After winning the Battle Of Fort Henry on the Tennessee River on February 6, 1862, General Ulysses S. Grant lead his men cross-country to win the Battle Of Fort Donelson. He also sent 4 iron ships and 3 gunboats to attack Fort Donelson from the Cumberland River. Heavy cannons that was well put along the river stopped the Union's river walk. The first day was mostly Grant's men getting into place. The Southern Cavalry under Colonel Nathan Bedford Forest fought the Union while the Confederate soldiers dug more trenches outside the Fort's already strong weapons
- 27,000 Union soldiers under General Ulysses S. Grant against 21,000 Confederate soldiers under General John B. Floyd, some even Froze to death. February 12-16, 1862 Union won when Confederates surrendered the surrounded fort. More than 17,000 killed, wounded, missing or captured by Union or which more than 15,000 were Confederate soldiers.
