Solving Systems of Equations Using Substitution
Step 1: Solve for the first variable.
In some cases, before you can solve for the first variable, you may have to solve for a variable in order to substitute in for the variable. After you have completed this step, you may solve for the first variable.
Step 2: Solve for the second variable.
Using the solution for the variable you have just found, substitute in for the first solution and find the second variable.
Step 3: Write your solution.
Using the information you got from steps one and two, write your solution Be sure to write your solution in the form of an ordered pair, (x,y), and be sure that the ordered pair is in the correct order.
Step 4: Check your solution.
Check your solution by plugging in your solution for each variable. Remember to repeat this step for each equation in the system of equations. If the solution proves to be true in each equation, then the solution is correct. If the solution does not prove to be correct for each equation, then you have more work to do.
