Damaging Reproductive System
The reason woman will damage their reproductive system to not get pregnant. But how do they damage it. The sexual or reproductive organs are also called gonads which includes the women ovaries can be effected by a chemotherapy drug and lead to infertility. Damage to the reproductive organs is called gonadal toxicity or gonadal dysfunction.
Reproductive organs damage is often related to the type and dose of chemotherapy drugs. Drugs produce most severe side effects include:
-Busulfan (busulfex) -Cisplatin ( platinol AQ)
-Chlorambucil (leukeran) -Cyclophosphamide ( cytoxan, procytox)
-Mechlorethaminel ( nitrogen, mustard,mustargen)
Other factors that can put a person at risk include:
-the combination of drugs given, such as those used to treat hodgkin lymphoma or leukemia.
- chemotherapy given in combination with radiation therapy to the pelvis
Some chemotherapy drugs can affect the ovaries so they stop producing eggs or do not produce the normal amount of hormones. When the ovaries stop producing eggs the women can't get pregnant. Sometimes they don't stop but , women's might get irregular periods or completely stop.
The person can go to the doctor to get cured. The doctor may do a physical test to check the genitals. Sometimes you should go check the doctor before so there is no problem. One advice i would give is just don't take chemotherapy drugs in the first place.
