About Dr. Pedro Kuri

The proprietor of Dr. Kuri and Associates in Tijuana, Mexico, Dr. Pedro Kuri is recognized as a leader in the Lap-Band procedure. Since 1998, he has performed more than 5,000 surgeries and trained numerous doctors in the procedure. In recognition of his achievements, Dr. Pedro Kuri received the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders’ Latin American Pioneer of the Lap-Band System award at its 13th World Congress.

To prepare for his career, Dr. Kuri attended the National University of Mexico School of Medicine. Becoming board certified as a general surgeon, he started his clinical training at Medical Specialty Hospital No. 25, part of the Mexican Social Security Institute. Subsequently, he accepted a residency in general surgery at the General Hospital National Medical Center in Mexico City and joined National Medical Center to become a surgery specialist.

After finishing his clinical training, Dr. Pedro Kuri worked as a general surgeon in Tijuana General Hospital No. 20. The institution later named him chairman of surgery, a position he held for nine years. While in this role, he trained in performing laparoscopies at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. Upon learning about the Lap-Band procedure, he trained in the technique under Dr. Mitiku Belachew and Dr. Armando Castillo. Throughout this period, he also served as a senior professor and as sinodal of final examinations at the University of Baja California School of Medicine, as well as a professor of post-graduate surgery at Tijuana General Hospital.
