In March 1854, a college for young people was created in Fox,Wisconsin. The college was created by a Baptist religious group for young Baptists. A man named Thomas.G. Eggleston held the contract to build at a cost of $6,000 on a 5 acre of land in the heart of Fox Lake.The Fox
Lake site was accepted for a college for young women.Jason Downer, a lawyer and member of the supreme court was a devout or serious Congregationalist .They named it Downer College because that is Jason Downer's last name and he was interested in a girl's collage so he gave the people money. The college opened in October 1856 to 58 students for three terms per year with a tuition from $14.50 to $25.00. The college eventually moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
