Agents of Socialization

Katie Conklin

My family began socialized me in many different ways. My parents taught me how to be responsible and make good decisions. Even though we have lived in the same place all of my life, my parents took me many different places on vacation so I could learn the cultures from different areas of the nation and world. My Grandma Ruth taught me that it is important to be kind to everyone I meet and my grandpa taught me that to accomplish anything in life you have to be willing to work hard. My Grandma Barb taught me to give to people less fortunate than myself and to always be positive. My family always makes sure to get together for birthdays- aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, great grandparents. This taught me the importance of family and that it is important to always be there for each other. Since I was an only child, I learned to entertain myself and do things on my own, but I also learned to care for younger kids and get along with others since I was so close with my younger cousins.

Peers Groups

Since I was little, I have been friends with Kristen, Kerri, and Kaleigh. They had a huge impact on me because they all are the ones who persuaded me to play the violin. Since they all started the violin when they were younger, I saw how great it was to learn to play an instrument and without them I never would have picked up a violin. My orchestra friends also socialize me because they teach me how important it is to persevere and work hard to learn music and do well. My youth group has socialized me since middle school in teaching me how important it is to not lose yourself in every day things or challenges. My best friend Amanda has had a great impact on me because she has a big part in all of my decisions since she always has my best interests in mind. I also help with Vacation Bible School at my church, which helps socialize me since I want to be an elementary school teacher.

I help with a 3rd grade class at Lincoln Elementary, which has helped socialize me because I have learned how to better work with younger kids and be a teacher. Since I want to become an elementary school teacher, this is important for me. I am also in Chamber and Pit Orchestra which have both taught me the importance of hard work and dedication. This is important because they are skills I will use later on in life. School in general has taught me how to manage my time well and get things done in time for a deadline. School house rock has been used in my classes since elementary school. Since my dad is a social studies teacher, we also have it at home. School House Rock taught me about the amendments, grammar, government, and other things.

Mass Media

I think that Mass Media has more of an impact on me now as a teenager than it did when I was younger. Social Media sites like Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Tumblr, and Vine have a huge impact on not only me, but the people around me as well. This influences my opinions, my fashion sense, and most of the norms in our culture today in general. Books also have a large impact on me because they give me a greater perspective on the world. For example, one of my favorite books, A Thousand Splendid Suns, takes place in Afghanistan before and during the Taliban. This allowed me to  see what it was like in a part of the world that I could only imagine. When I was a little kid, most of my favorite shows were on PBS Kids. One of my favorites was Cyberchase which taught about math. I also loved Between the Lions which covered reading. However, my favorite show when I was younger was Lizzie McGuire, which showed me the importance of family and friendship. I believe that Mass Media is one of the agents that socialized me the most.
