Our nomination for the 2013 word of the year is “Twerk”. According to google trends, 2013 was the year that this word got popular. In August of 2013, twerk was searched on average 100 times a day, beating the word "selfie" by a mile.
One of the reasons why this word might be so popular is that many celebrities, such as Miley Cyrus, have been using it in their everyday lives and music videos. When this happened, many people that "look up" to those celebrities started using it in sentences, looking it up, etc. Many people made their own videos of themselves "twerking", and you can see this popular dance move at many party events.
It was said that a state in the U.S. banned twerking. If you were caught performing this dance move, you would go to jail for 30 days.
