Alvin Ailey

Alvin Ailey was born January 5, 1931 in Rogers, Texas.  He grew up without a father.  He lived in the town of Navasota, Texas.  while growing up, the music from church and the dances from a dance hall inspired him to feel the need dor dance.  at the age of 12, he went to Los Angeles.  He studied modern dance with Lester Horton in 1949 and joined the Horton Dance Company the year after.  in 1954, he made Broadway in the musical "House of Flowers".  while in New York, he got to study dance with Martha Graham and act with Stella Adler.  in 1958, he created his own dance company.  he also choregraphed a piece called the Blues Suite.  in the 1960s, he took his company on the road.   they went on tours which were sponsored by the U.S. State Department.  In 1988, he was honored by the Kennedy Center for his contribution to the arts.  Even though he died, the dancers of the ALvin Aily American Dancer Theatre have performed for more than 20 million people aroud the world.

Inspiration  for music and dance began from a church and a dance hall.  By the age of 12, he went to Los Angeles.
