East Lawrence High School Newsletter - 1.12.17

Happy New Year! We are half way through this school year.  As I begin this newsletter, I'd like to share part of my reflection from our ELHS 12 Days of Giving.  I am overwhelmed, humbled, & grateful. Overwhelmed at how God took a wild idea and showed just exactly what He could do, humbled at how much and who we sometimes take for granted, and grateful to serve alongside the best students & teachers on the planet.

The Decatur Daily asked about how many people we reached with this project. So we just began estimating the numbers involved in each group we targeted. Not counting our parent video, we were well over 200. And that’s just a tangible value. We will never know this side of heaven the real impact we have made. But it’s not even about that. It’s about being a blessing to these folks. To people who say, “No one ever thinks of us,” or “Usually when people call us it’s to complain," or for someone special who we were able to bless with a cash gift, or for the families who will now have a nice meal for Christmas. These are the unsung heroes of this project and I hope that after we left, they truly felt this way.

I think the text from Mrs P Smith really sums it up. She said, “Tate I feel like we have fed the 5,000 with just 5 loaves and 2 fish… We have touched so many lives with this project.” I read that text sitting in the gym at a ball game and tears came to my eyes. Tears come again now as I type. I’m overwhelmed at the generosity of our students! They flat showed out and blew me away in their giving and their serving. But why should I have expected anything different? We just have good kids. And that statement resounded from every aspect of this project, from the folks we served to the reporters who talked with our students. With our students (and all of us for that matter), I hope that this will spark a true realization that it is indeed better to give than to receive and an internalization of what they have learned and experienced so that it won’t just be a project for them, but a way of life. For everyone involved, on both sides, I trust that spirits were lifted, hearts were encouraged, and hope was restored.

I love our ELHS family and I’ve never been more proud of them and never been more proud to be an Eagle!  I'm excited to see what the new year holds for us at ELHS and can't wait to see our Eagles soar even higher in 2017!
