Line Creek Leader
Each month, a student from every class is honored as a Line Creek Leader. The students are chosen based on their display of one of the 7 Habits. This month, Line Creek's habit was "Be Proactive." A person who is proactive takes initiative, chooses their own actions, attitudes, and moods, is a responsible person, doesn't blame others, and does the right thing without being asked, even when no one is looking.
Congratulations to Abby who was voted by her peers as the September Leader in Mrs. Loring's class. Abby will get to attend a special leadership luncheon.
Writing: Small Moments
In writing, our class is in the beginning stages of writing a personal narrative. A personal narrative is a story about something you've done or experienced. We spent a lot of time choosing the perfect topic and making sure that it is a small "seed story" as compared to a overwhelming "watermelon topic." We choose to write "seed stories" so that we are able to provide a great amount of detail, including thoughts and feelings that were experienced throughout whatever is being written about. We're looking forward to reading and sharing our completed personal narratives.
In second grade, we put a lot of focus on each student's reading fluency. One way to explain reading fluency is "the ability to read aloud expressively and with understanding." We measure reading fluency by having students read a grade-level passage while tracking the words they read correctly and their ability to comprehend what they read. By the end of the year, the goal is for students to be able to read 90 correct words per minute out of a second grade, end of the year passage. One way to improve your child's reading fluency is to have them read aloud at home. Whether they're reading to a parent, a sibling, or a stuffed animal, oral reading is great for children. Another way to improve reading fluency is to have children read a story or passage more than once, making them more comfortable with the words in the text.
Today we had a kick-off assembly for the Fitness-A-Thon which is put on by PTA. This event promotes Habit #7: Sharpen the Saw. It is a great fundraiser for PTA, which allows them to do so much for us throughout the school year. Please have your child share with you the white envelope full of information about the Fitness-A-Thon that they brought home today.
