Goals

  • Use technology in an effective way taking care of the materials.
  • Work in group activities and debate.
  • Be conscious about preserving the planet.
  • Examine and synthesize information of multiple sources.
  • Linking new information and prior knowledge.
  • Create a story and animate the story.
  • Invent questions.
  • Construct an interactive mural using QR codes.
  • Comment the film and the mural.
  • Test the knowledge of other classmates.

  • Short description

In this activity students will discover and explore five different ecosystems. The teacher will divide the class into five groups, each one is going to be the expert in one ecosystem. They will use the resources given by the teacher in Edmodo and the classmates as they learn about the composition of their ecosystem, how to differenciate one from another, threats to different ecosystems and endangered species and how to stop it.

They will conduct Internet research, create and animate a story in Toontastic that highlights what they have learn about one of the ecosystems given. Then they will select the best links to learn their ecosystem and write questions about it. They will do a mural putting the links (QR codes) in categories. There is a final game in which students have to look for information in the murals.

Finally, students have to evaluate the work of others commenting three good things and one bad about the story and the mural of the rest of the groups in Edmodo.

    Description

The hole activity takes 14 sessions (7 weeks) and it has 3 activities.

At the beginnig of each session the teacher has to explain briefly what are they going to do and how.

    Session 1

In this session the teacher have to explain to the pupils the hole activity, he or she will divide the class in five groups according to the characteristics of the students to promote the diversity in each group. Once that he or she have done this, the teacher have to give the name of the ecosystem in which the group will be the expert by draw. They have to create an account in Edmodo where the activities are well explained and the teacher will create the different groups in the social network.

Activity 1: SAVING AN ENDANGERED ANIMAL

    Session 2 and 3

The students have to check the links looking for the main ideas of the information given in links, those links are in edmodo and the book that is in class.

    Session 4 and 5

The teacher will explain briefly the application of Toontastic and how create the story, again. The students have two sessions to do it, with the information that they found in the links and the requirements that the teacher has said.

    Session 6

The students will present their story that is recorded and put the link in the big group in Edmodo. The other groups will comment three positive aspects and one that they will improve in Edmodo. All the members of the group debate and write one posts for each group.

    Activity 2: AN INTERACTIVE MURAL

    Session 7

With the links given at the beginning each group has to select the most important information and links to help the rest of the classmates to learn about their ecosystem. They will invent 10 questions for the final game. The answers of this questions have to be in the links selected.

    Session 8 and 9

The students will make their own mural transforming the links into QR codes and categorize the information in : what it is, where it is, animals, plants and climate. They have to print the QR codes and to hide them in the mural. Finally they will put the questions in the big group in Edmodo. The teacher will put the murals all around the class.

    Session 10 and 11

Each group has to read all the questions and look for the answers in the QR codes that are in the murals. Then they will commet in Edmodo the three good things and one that they will improve of each mural. All the members of the group debate and write one posts for each group.

    Session 12

Debate and comment all the answers to control that the students are learning in a good way.

    Activity 3: THE FINAL GAME

    Session 13 and 14

The final game. One of the students of each group will be a penguin and the class will be converted into a block of ice giant (the giant ice block is divided into small blocks) with fish in them. When a penguin jumps from a block, the fishes of the block are removed. They have to rolling dice (from 1 to 5) with a dice on internet. Depending of the number they will answer about one ecosystem and not other. The other members of the group have to look for the information if they don't remember it, they will have 1 minute to look for answer in the mural. If they respond well to that question they will be able to move forward and continue to get more fishes (each block of ice has a different amount of fish) but if they respond badly, they won´t be able move of their site.

Finally the winner group will have a prize that are some sweets but the teacher will give to each group one animal in augmented reality as a prize for the effort they have putted in the activities and how well they have done.

    Example of the proyect

Here you have the text each activity and also what students have done.

We are going to use Edmodo to communicate with our students and to upload the activities.

Activity 1: SAVING AN ENDANGERED ANIMAL

'In this activity you are going to be heroes! With the links below you have to learn about the tropical rainforest. After then, you have to create a story in Toontastic choosing and endangered animal of your ecosystem, saying why is it endangered and how you can help it. You have to use 5 scenes and between 4 and 6 minutes of story.

Remember to upload the link of your story in Edmodo. After the presentations each member of the group have to comment 3 positive aspects and one that you will improve for the presentations of the other groups.'

    What an ecosystem is?

    What's like where you live?

    Endangered animals.

    Activity 2: AN INTERACTIVE MURAL

'In this activity you are going to create an interactive mural thanks to the QR codes.
First of all you have to invent 10 questions (2 per person) of your ecosystem asking about the main aspects of it:
What is an ecosystem? Where is your ecosystem? and others asking about the climate, animals and the plants that live in. You have to print this questions and to upload them in the big group to help your classmates to learn your ecosystem.
With the links in which appear the answer to your questions, you have to transform them into QR codes using the webpage below and create a nice mural that reflects the characteristics of your ecosystem putting there the QR codes.
Finally take a picture and upload it in Edmodo. Each member of the group have to comment 3 positive aspects and one that you will improve for the mural of the other groups.'
