May Newsletter

Wow, the last full month of school is upon us. Where has the time gone? It has been a true pleasure to watch your child grow and change this year. What an honor to be a Kindergarten teacher!

    Important Events

If you know families who have children that will be in Kindergarten next year, please have them bring their child to Kindergarten Registration on May 5. It is a “Come and Go” event from 4 - 7 pm. Parents and students can meet the teachers and tour classrooms during this time. Parents will need to bring a birth certificate, social security card and shot records. If you are not able to attend, you may also register during the week of May 4-8.

We will be rescheduling our field trip to the Ft. Worth Zoo for May 11. Please dress your child in the BLUE Kindergarten shirt with the white and green zebra lettering we wore to Casa Mañana. Please remember to pack a completely disposable lunch with extra snacks and water. If you would like your child to wear sunscreen, please apply it at home before school. Do not send any money for the gift shop because it is too difficult to keep track of each child’s money and purchases. To be fair to everyone, chaperones will be asked not to buy treats, drinks, souvenirs, etc. for their group. If you have signed up to chaperone, please bring a backpack or tote bag to carry the lunches for your group on the day of the trip. We should have plenty of room for chaperones on the bus, but if you would prefer to drive, there is a $5.00 parking fee at the zoo.

Field Day will be on Friday, May 29 from 8:00-12:00 for Kindergarten (other grade levels will be on this day as well, but their events will go longer into the afternoon). Your child will be participating in individual and team events with their classmates. If you would like to follow and watch your child’s events, a map and schedule will be posted outside each classroom so you can find the class throughout the day. If you would like to help with concessions, you may want to sign up after 12:00, so you don’t miss your child’s events. Ticket information will come home soon. We recommend spending between $3-$5 on tickets. We will be wearing the royal blue Silver Lake Kindergarten t-Shirts with the green and white zebra lettering.

We will have a school wide Hike and Bike on May 29 before Field Day. We will start gathering at the corner of Dooley and Dove Loop and Hike and Bike to school together (at around 7:15) with the help of police escorts. It will be a great way to kick off our field day!

Our Kindergarten Awards Ceremony (we do not do a "graduation") will be on Monday, June 1 at 7:45 a.m. in your child’s classroom. It is a wonderful time to celebrate your child's accomplishments and reminisce about a wonderful year. PLEASE TRY TO ATTEND THIS SPECIAL EVENT!

What are we learning this month?

    *Language Arts:

-I can use advanced reading strategies to read unfamiliar words:

    • Word familes (-at, -op, -in, etc.), digraphs and dipthongs (th, sh, ou, ee, etc.)

    -I can comprehend texts by:

    • Retelling stories
    • Describing characters and reasons for their actions
    • Noticing how writer's can get my attention
    • Noticing interesting text features

-I can use the GAPstopper technique when writing to give my reader more information. To stop the “gaps” in a story we:

    Go back and reread
sk: What would my reader want to know?
    ut it in the story

I Can Read Poems and High Frequency words of the week:

-May. 4: "The Farmer Plants the Seeds" some

-May 11: "A Cone of Ice Cream" were

-May 18: "Down by the Ocean" by

-May. 25: "Take me Out to the Ocean" out, was, saw

By now your child should have quite a collection of high frequency words in his/her reading and writing repertoire. If you are noticing your child is not reading and/or spelling many of these words, please practice over the summer. First grade will have a new list for you and you will want your child to be ready.
