Harriet Tubman was born in 1820, in Dorchester County , Maryland

Harriet Tubman was born Araminta Ross, but later adopted the first name Harriet from her mother.Harriet was only 13 years old when she defended another slave from getting hit. Her owner hit her so bad she got a severe head injury that would affect her for the rest of her life.

Tubman endured seizures, severe headaches and narcoleptic episodes for the rest of her life. She also experienced intense dream states, which she classified as religious experiences.

She escaped from Maryland on September 17, 1849 with her two brothers. There was a $300 reward for their return. Her brothers, Harry and Ben, soon returned.
