Jonathan Standefer - Forewarned Is Forearmed
Jonathan Standefer is a philanthropist and entrepreneur who says that he is doing some traveling and exploring new ideas. One of the ideas he is exploring is the possibility of starting a new company that would have a built-in mechanism for giving back to the community and making a difference.
He has a long-standing interest in social issues like homelessness and the environment. He is also interested in volunteering his time where it can do the most good.
Jonathan Standefer believes that volunteering at an animal shelter can be an endlessly rewarding experience. Shelters often operate on a shoestring budget and can use all the help they can get. But he says that there are things to keep in mind when volunteering at one.
It's important to know going in that not all the jobs for volunteers are glamorous. It isn't always getting to play with puppies or take dogs for a walk. Sometimes volunteers are asked to clean up the poop in a dog kennel, and he says people who get squeamish about such things should be aware of what they could be getting themselves into. It's also a good idea to know ahead of time what sort of animals are housed in the shelter you want to volunteer at. Most animal shelters have a lot of cats and dogs, but many also take in birds, rats, and other small animals. Different types of animals are usually housed in different rooms, if not in different buildings, but space constraints can lead to imaginative arrangements. Jonathan Standefer says people with aversions to particular animals should check those things out ahead of time, because forewarned is forearmed.
