52 IN 52
The 52 Albums that define my love for music
WEEK 43/ALBUM 43
WHO: HANDSOME - :"S/T"
Why: Total accident, total luck. In May of 1997, I had just turned 18, I was getting ready to graduate High School, and one night headed out to a show at Nautica. The show was The Descendents, Less Than Jake, Guttermouth and this new band called Handsome. We got there just as Handsome was finishing up their last song, which was "Ride Down" and I knew I had to find out more about this band.
I found a sampler they were passing out for free with the first 2 songs from their new CD.
The next day or so, I bought the CD. To this day, it is stillmay favorite 1 and done record of all time.
If you dont know this record, you should.
Handsome was made up of band members from Iceburn, Helmet, Quicksand and the Cro-Mags. Yeah, those bands. I had heard of Handsome forming, but never put it together until I saw the end of that set, and I was bummed that I missed them almost completely.
Handsome was lightning in a bottle. This album is one of the most solid rock albums to be released, and have such a small population hear it. The few of us that know this record, know how amazing it is. They were the perfect mix of heavy, melodic and just raw rock and roll. This record doesnt have a bad song on it.
But, like most amazing bands, they were gone way too quick. Handsome was only a band for a little under 2 years, which is a total shame. They are one of the bands I truely hope reunite one day, just so I can sing along with these songs just once. Until that happens, Im glad someone did the right thing.
