The Plague Of Lena- how the church was affected from the Black Death
While many people know that peasants and nobles were greatly affected from the Bubonic Plague, many people do not know that the Church was in fact also changed after the Black Death too. One reason for this was that the people needed God to help them with the Plague. Many thought that God had sent them the Black Death as a punishment; "In Christian Europe, the Roman Catholic Church explained the plague as God’s punishing the sins of the people. The church called for people to pray, and it organized religious marches, pleading to God to stop the “pestilence.” " The people also needed help from the church, "Because Europeans had no idea what caused the Black Death, many sought relief through prayer. When God did not answer their petitions, they began to question the efficacy of the Catholic Church." Since they thought that God and the church were ignoring them, people began to lose faith the the religion, "Because Europeans had no idea what caused the Black Death, many sought relief through prayer. When God did not answer their petitions, they began to question the efficacy of the Catholic Church." Another problem that affected the church during and after the Bubonic Plague was that the church went through economic changes. In one way, the church gained money, as stated here; Like all European institutions, the Church was shaken by the Black Death, although it benefited financially. Many of those who died left a part of their wealth to the Church, establishing new benefices that could be bestowed on church officials." On the other hand, a different source says that the church had lost money, therefore having to come up with new income, "The Church had several other fund raising options in addition to selling serfs their freedom: selling church offices (simony), letting one man buy several offices at the same time, charging fees for all sorts of church services, and selling indulgences to buy time out of Purgatory after one died." In Conclusion, the Black Death had a big impact on the church, from people turning to God and not getting a response, to the church having to make up money that they lost or gained from priests or other holy men dying.
