The Basics

Low Density Lipoprotein:

LDL is the  lipoprotein that carries cholesterol to your blood stream

Shows what Coronary Artery Disease looks like on the inside.

High Density Lipoprotein:

HDL carries the harmful cholesterol away from arteries and helps prevent you from heart attack and stroke.

Affect of high cholesterol

  • A bad balance between HDL and LDL can lead to plaque blockage in the artery
  • This can lead to a heart attack

Coronary Artery Disease

What is Coronary Artery Disease: it is the build-up of plaque in the heart's arteries.

Leads to: this can lead to heart attack or stroke.

Leading risk factor for CAD is:  

  • high LDL and low HDL
  • diabetes
  • smoking
  • family history
  • high blood pressure

Relation to cholesterol:

  • LDL is what carries cholesterol to the blood stream which then can build up and can begin to block your Coronary artery
  • If you don't have enough HDL then your arteries can not be cleared from blockage

Prevention/ fix of high cholesterol

  • Good diet and exercise play a key role in preventing high cholesterol
  • decrease amounts of saturated fats and foods that contain high amounts
  • increase diet with fruits and vegetables
