Chemical bonding- a mutual attraction between the nuclei and the valence electrons chemical bond that bind the atoms together.

Individual atoms have relatively high potential energy which is lowered by bonding.

Nature favors low potential energy because it is more stable.


Ionic Bonds are bonds that are formed from metal and a non-metal through electrical attraction between large numbers of anions and cations.


Ionic bonds have the following properties:

.They can be dissolved in water

.They have a high melting point

.They do not conduct as a solid

.They do conduct as a liquid


Metallic Bonds are bonds formed by a metal and a metal.

Metallic bonds have the following properties:

.They are shiny

.They do not dissolve in water

.They have a high melting point

.They conduct as a solid

.They conduct as a liquid


Covalent Bonds are bonds formed by two non-metals by the sharing of electrons. There are Polar Covalent bonds which occurs when an equal electron sharing happens causing unequal electoral charge distribution. Nonpolar covalent bonds occur when electrons are equally shared and have equal electrical charge distribution.

Covalent bonds have the following properties:

.They can dissolve in water

.They have a low melting point

.They do not conduct as a solid

.They do not conduct as a liquid


These three bonds all occur because of the Octet Rule which states that compounds are always trying have eight electrons in their valence shell. The only exception to this rule is Boron because it forms bonds with only six electrons . Some electrons even have expanded valences, involving the d orbital and mainly the 4th period.
