Beatrice Prior grew up as a member of the abnegation faction. A faction of the selfless.

At the age of 16, she inevitably had to choose between remaining selfless in abnegation, and leaving her faction to become either dauntless, amity, erudite, and candor.

Ultimately, Beatrice Prior chose to allow her blood to fall into the Dauntless  chalice. She wanted their freedom, and to be brave like them.

After becoming Dauntless, she wanted to change her image. Now answering to the name "Tris", she decided to cut her hair, and get a couple of tattoos around her collarbone.  Taking on a whole new look..

Tris made a couple of friends, despite being a "stiff". Her instructor "Four" slowly became more than an instructor or friend.

Tris finally began moving up in rank. After defeating her biggest rivals ,Molly and Peter, the instructors were impressed.

With success comes envy. Three unknown subjects kidnapped Tris and threw her into a chasm, but her mom rescued her. Sadly, Tris's mom was shot and killed during the escape.....

The aptitude test showed that Tris was not fully dauntless, which she is told to keep a secret. This comes in handy later on....

People aren't split up into different groups, like the city in the books. People have lots of different traits, and some are more prominent than others, but they are all still there.
