Journal Entry #1

My name is John Leginsin. I am 19 years old. I am living in New York at the moment. I am fighting for the Union because I owe a duty to my Country and my family. Before I went to serve the war I worked at a store to earn money. Also I am against slavery and I want to stop it. I have a wife and 2 brothers that fight with the Union with me. I just came into camp to fight for the war, my rank i private but I think I can grow in rank because I will do good in training and help the Union win the war.

Dear My Love,

Its been kinda rough here. Not the best food but they still give it to us. Someone today got in trouble and had to have a sign hung to them saying thief because they stole something. I don't think you have to worry about me. After the Privates saw that, everyone is now on their best behavior. If you don't mind sending me some new clothes that would be very nice. Also I saw your Uncle Jack the other day with some other fellas. Thanks for everything, Sincerely your John.

What will Jeremiah's part be?

Jeremiah's part in the war will be on the battlefield battling against the Union. Jeremiah will be vigorously training for the war and fight in some battles.

How will it affect the South to have Nearly every battle in its territory?

This will help the South because since they are in there own territory they know what to expect the battlefield to be. Also they have home field advantage and know the landscape to be prepared for whatever there is.

What will it be like to be in a battle involving tens of thousands of soldiers?

It will be very scary and hard because it will be a nonstop battle for hours because there is lots of people that keep battling. Also the battle will be very dangerous and very hard not to get hurt because of all the people.

Will everyday routine and small encounters be that all some groups experience?

There will be lots of routine but very little battles. Most of the time the soldiers will train and some lucky soldiers will go into battles.

Grab the polish and scurry out, get the towel and run away, Put the polish on the Grey and scrub, scrub, scrub until its black. Hurry on before they know scrub, scrub fast until you see, your face on the black shoe, scrub, scrub, scrub.

Hurry on before they know. And quickly before they come. Put some more polish on and then run away. Hope they don't notice and quickly get away. Back in line and stand up straight.

Grab the polish and scurry out, get the towel and run away, Put the polish on the Black and scrub, scrub, scrub until its black. Hurry on before they know. scrub, scrub fast until you see, your face on the black shoe, scrub, scrub, scrub.

When you finish walk away, put the polish and towel away. Steer away from dirt and muck and keep those shoes looking nice all day. Keep them clean as long as you can, one week goes then another then a month. Then one day you take a look how there doing and you notice they are grey.

Grab the polish and scurry out, get the towel and run away, Put the polish on the Black and scrub, scrub, scrub until its black. Hurry on before they know. scrub, scrub fast until you see, your face on the black shoe, scrub, scrub, scrub.

Now the Chief is looking your way and see's your not in line so he gives you a punishment very ironic, for not being in place, he says you'll have to polish his shoes for the rest of the week.

Grab the polish and scurry out, get the towel and run away, Put the polish on the Black and scrub, scrub, scrub until its black. Hurry on before they know. scrub, scrub fast until you see, your face on the black shoe, scrub, scrub, scrub.

My favorite game that I did to stop boredom as a soldier was play cards. We played poker, stupid and black jack. Even though I have a gambling problem I still like to gamble. I started with $5 and now I have $20 so I guess Gambling helped me out.

This is a picture o my deck of cards I like to play with them.

Today I saw an amputation. It was terrible, I hope that I will never have to get one. There is alt of diseases that are spreading. I saw a guy that had red dots all over his face. They call it chicken pox. I had a fever a few days ago but now im feeling better. Almost everyone has gotten sick and there have been lots of deaths.
