Apps to Aid mLearning

Google Drive

What is this?

Google drive is a tool that allows for users to create presentations, word documents and more using a web browser. The documents are automatically saved and you can share documents which allows for collaboration between multiple people.

How can it be used?

In the K-12 classroom, google drive can be used to create an online version of documents where there is no need to print the document because it can be shared online and marked from there. This could allow students to see their feedback without risking losing their paper. Another way google drive can be used is through the use of collaboration. Students are able to work on group projects while they are in their own homes, as well as create presentations within their groups.

Polleverywhere

What is this?

Polleverywhere is an online tool that can be used by either sending in text messages to a number provided, or going online to the website. Polleverywhere is used to create polls and has multiple means to receive the results.

How can it be used?

This tool can be used to see if students actually understand the material. Because it's anonymous when you answer, those children who are kind of quieter will be more willing to actually tell the truth. The tool also gives children a voice. In a class with a lot of children it can be hard to ensure that you hear from all the children, but if you use a pool you can view answers from all of them without spending too much time on it.

mobl21

What is it?

Mobl21 is a tool that allows for the creation of flashcards, study guides and quizzes. It publishes to a variety of devices and you are able to manage users content.

How can it be used?

In the K-12 classroom, mobl21 can be used to help students prepare for approaching exams. It allows study guides to be posted for students to know what main concepts will be tested upon and also allows for students to create flash cards for the main concepts so that they are able to test themselves in a way that allows for memorization to occur. Because there can be online quizzes it also gives students the ability to see what kind of questions they should expect on the test. This allows them to know what they should expect which may help to get rid of some of the test taking anxiety that is often seen during exams.

Voicethread

What is this?

Voicethread is an online tool that allows students to create a voice document. The teacher is able to grade the work, but instead of just one person being able to see the work, people from other schools, as well as parents are able to view the work and comment on the product as well.

How can this be used?

In a K-12 school, voicethread can be used to get students more interested in writing. They would be able to write an essay or create a story, and instead of writing for just the teacher, they would be able to create something for a larger audience. This would allow other students to be able to hear their peers work. It would be a different way to peer edit because they would be able to hear the work instead of just viewing it. Voicethread could also allow for students to hear their classes from their houses which would increase the amount of learning that would be able to get accomplished.

Elevated Math

What is it?

Elevated math is a free app that provides learners with tutoring, via graphical and animated lessons, and an interactive whiteboard on maths topics including measurement, estimation, large digit addition, geometry, data analysis, and algebra.

Because the app has such a broad coverage on topics it can help many different students struggling.
