(1279 - 1368)
The Yuan Dynasty was ruled by Kublai Khan. He was a grandson of Genghis Khan and after he defeated the last Song ruler he declared himself emperor of China. He moved the capital to Beijing. Attempts were made to gain the loyalty of Chinese citizens such as not making them follow the Mongol way of life, adopting Chinese practices, and giving the dynasty a Chinese name. Eventually rebellions sprang up and the dynasty began to crumble. Kublai Khan died in 1294 and his successors were unable to rule with much skill. The dynasty was overthrown in 1368.
