In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s immigration became very popular. Individual ethnic neighborhoods formed but many Americans believed that the immigrants wouldn’t be able to adopt the American culture and it could hurt American Society.

How the Other Half Lives was a publication of photojournalism by Jacob Riis. It shows the poor living conditions in New York City during the 1880s. It exposed the slums of New York City to the upper and middle classes of New York City.

This cartoon displays Chinese immigration being barred and preventing them from becoming citizens. This was enforced by the Chinese Exclusion act.

1859-Student of chines heritage had been forced to attend racially segregated schools.

1865- The civil War ended

1870- Denis Kearny an Irish immigrant organized the Workingman’ s Party of California to fight Chinese immigration

1887- The American Protective ASsociation founded by Henry Bowers

1892-1954- 12 million immigrants passed Ellis Island

1910- Asian immigrants arrived in San Francisco.

1910- California opened barracks on ANgel Island for Asian immigrants
