Five Mobile Apps for Elementary School Students

1) 10 Monkeys

10 Monkeys is an app designed to improve students multiplication skills. The objective of the game is to free all the trapped monkeys by correctly answering multiplication problems. You receive extra points for answering the questions with accuracy and speed so students can always challenge themselves by trying to beat their previous high score. The problems cover the times tables from 2 to 10 which is perfect for middle to upper elementary school students. The app also blocks all ads so it is safe for the student to use without supervision. 2) Kids Boats

Kids Boats is an app designed to develop students understanding of geographical knowledge as well as introduce them to various animals found in different regions. Children can travel in a boat down a river avoiding obstacles and collecting stars. As they travel they meet new animals and be introduced to the climates in which they belong. With this app students can explore forests and meadows, freezing arctic and deserts environments. In each environment there will be animals waiting to meet you. Students can choose from three different ways to control the ship. They can blow on the device, tilt it or touch and drag. Along with developing geographical knowledge children can develop their fine motor skills.This app is compatible with iOS 4.3 or later and can be operated on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. 3) Story Wheel

Story Wheel has two versions: free and paid. The free version is a basic "Story Teller" theme pack. If you wish you can buy more elaborate themes you can choose from three: Princesses & Knights, Pirates or Space for $0.99 each.To play, spin the wheel, land on an image and record a 30 second blurb. Of course there is a redo button and a stop button in case you use less than 30 seconds to speak. Repeat until you have created a fun and creative short story up to 12 pages long! While students have fun make-believing they will be improving their speaking skills as well as there moral and cognitive development. Story Wheel is compatible with iOS 4.3 or later with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

4) BrainPOP Jr. Movie of the Week

With BrainPOP Jr. Movie of the Week students will engage in learning activities from a variety of subjects including Science, Social Studies, Math, Language Arts, Health and Technology. There will be a different animated movie related to a specific subject along with related quizzes and activities to complete. The content is appropriate for lower elementary school students. The basic app is free but there are also two more paid versions. The first costs $1.99 and gives you three extra movies and their features. The second costs $5.99 and gives you unlimited access to all the movies and bonus features at any time. These are subscriptions and expire within a year. The app is totally secure, requires iOS 5.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. 5) Bluster

With Bluster students can build their vocabulary while having fun. To play the game students swipe through a word list and try to find 10 words that have something in common. They could choose 10 rhyming works, words with prefixes or suffixes, synonyms, root words, homophones, or adjectives. There are three levels of difficulty to suit students who are learning at any pace. Students can play alone, with or against friends. When playing against friends you can "attack" with whether such as snow storms or tornadoes to give the game an extra fun competitive flare. The app features over 800 vocabulary words so students never get bored or treat it simply as a memorizing game! This app is completely free, requires iOS 5.0 or later and is only compatible with iPad.
