The Jonestown  Massacre

Do you know what the Jonestown Massacre is? I bet not. It's not widely spoken, but like every single Genocide/massacre it's important, even when it has no relations to you. This genocide is highly important because many lives were, taken. Yes, it wasn't as much as the holocaust many years before the Jonestown massacre, but many important lives to hundreds of thousands of Americans. The people in the Jonestown community could have been something great and wonderful. They could have changed the world and could have made the world have a different outlook on society, like anybody else.

Many people died on November 18th, 1978 in a remote location in Gayana. The Town of Jonestown was founded by Rev. Jim Jones, who was very well known to help people of the church (The People's Temple church) with their personal and their financial issues. But later after they had set up their lives in Jonestown Jim Jones changed their lives forever. Many relatives of the saints in the Jonestown society were worried for the safety of the children and the seniors and adults, concerning some people spoke of wanting to leave but was being kept unwillingly. This issue was then put on the lap of Congressman Leo Ryan, who then decided to visit Jonestown to put the minds of the worried at ease. Upon arrival at the Jonestown Congressman Leo Ryan asked who wanted to leave. Some said yes, and some stayed out of fear of Jim Jones reaction.  Congressman Leo Ryan decided he wanted to stay back but before the bus with the refugees was able to leave he was attacked by a man with a knife. He then decided to leave.

Jim Jones found out and started to get very agitated and frustrated. He was afraid that word would get out. He gathered the citizens of Jonestown and gave a speech on how the Americans would come and torture their seniors and children. He then told them that the best way to have those things not to happen was to have an "organized suicide". He sent men to go to the airport where they were barding to go to America

He mixed a poison called flavor-aid with cyanide, then

Killed the defenseless children and seniors first, then they killed the adults, the ones who didn't want to die were injected with needles viciously.

The 8 steps of genocide did not all apply to the Jonestown Massacre/Genocide. The classification of the massacre was that "us" was the people of the temple and the "them was everyone who wasn't a part of their society. There was no dehumanization, organization, polarization, or preparation. The extermination consisted of Jim Jones and others killing others with the poison and then killing themselves. There was no denial because they were all dead, and the survivors did not deny the horror that had befallen them.

In the end many people young and old had died. Even though it wasn't some international issue (though it should be) or a mass killing like the holocaust. Keep in mind that these were great people with heart, emotions, feeling, and strong relief. Keep in mind this could have been you.                                            In the end many people young and old had died. This is a project for school, if you want to care for this genocide go ahead and do so, and if you want to just keep this in your , memory and learn the lesson of living.
