Finding vertebrates in the Omaha Zoo

The Arapaima is one of the largest freshwater fish species.

Common Name: Arapaima                              Scientific Name: Arapaima gigas

        Biome: fresh water                                           Home range/habitat: Amazon river

Fish  adaptations:

1. breath with gills

2. ectothermic

3. most have scales   

4. fins

5. most lay jelly coated eggs in water


Arapaima adaptations:

         1. large size       

2. hard skull

              3. stream-lined body

             4. the tongue has teeth

                   5. an air breathing fish


Has very venomous skin.

Common name: Panamanian golden frog (endangered)                Scientific name: Atelopus zeteki

Biome: Rainforest                                       Home range/habitat: Panamanian rainforest
