The things used to make a thunderstorm are moisture, unstable air and lift. You need moisture to form clouds and rain. You need unstable air that is warm and can rise rapidly.

the Atlas-Centaur rocket launched by NASA was blown to bits just moments after its liftoff because it was struck by lightning nine times. The unchartered rocket worth $78 million contained more than $83 million worth military communications satellite. but the rocket was blown apart over the Atlantic Ocean by the lightning from the thunderstorm, thereby minimizing the damage caused.
