Ella Fitzgerald was born on April 25, 1917, in Newport News, Virginia. Soon after her birth her parents separated, and Ella and her mother moved to New York. Ella’s mother worked in a laundry and after some time started a catering business. Soon after their got settled in New York, Ella’s mother started dating a man who worked as a chauffeur, and then moved in with him together with Ella. The family lacked money, and even Ella worked as a lookout in a local "house" when she was about 7 years old. Later, Ella Fitzgerald recalled:
"We didn’t have much. We came up at time when you had to stand in line for a bag of horse meat. But we shared everything we had."
Ella’s voice made her special. Since her early age she sang popular songs, tried different vocal styles, and became a frequent performer in school shows. Children liked it when she sang, and according to Ella, she even became "a little bigheaded." When she grew into a teenager, the Realisation of the fact she was not physically beautiful was difficult for her. However, her mother managed to persuade Ella that her singing talent was much more important than beauty.
