Background: He was the first black citizen to have a government rank. He was born into slavery in Maryland, 1818. While he was in slavery he had tried to escape twice before he finally achieved escaping. He held a high U.S government rank. He is the eminent human right leader in the abolition movement . His mother died when he was around the age 10. He made work for Edward Covey who is considered the "slave breaker". He told his stories in front of a crowd. Frederick also published books. He returned to the United States as a free man. Frederick Douglass made a newspaper called Frederick douglass weekly.
