Frederick Douglass was born February 1818 as a slave. He was born into slavery in Talbot County on Maryland's eastern shore in 1817 or 1818, he was named Frederick Bailey, but he changed it to Frederick Douglass. Frederick Douglass established his reputation as the foremost African American spokes person of the 19 century as well as one of the nation's most effective orators and activists. He was a relativaly early advocate of granting women the right to vote. Frederick Douglass died Frebruary 20,1895.
