Gear Box Explained
Gear box is the main component of transmission systems, which are included in many motors, vehicles or machines. The gear box is used to provide a safe and proper gear reduction and is usually built to last for many years. It is used to convert the engine speed into torque, which moves the motor/vehicle/machine forward. Torque is a power generated through a mechanical action of solid materials and is often interchangeably confused and used with transmission. The gearbox creates the right change of angle in direction, but each type is made for a specific purpose.
Most gear boxes are used to increase the torque and reduce the speed of the drive-shaft, but there are several types available. In general, there are two types of gear boxes: manual and automatic. The manual gear box is the simplest one and is widely used. It is available in many different sizes and shapes and involves manual movement. The manual gear box moves using a sifter attached on it.
The automatic gear box requires only a little human interaction, which is the only difference with manual gearboxes. As their name implies, automatic gear boxes automatically choose the correct gear as the engine is speeding up or reducing the speed. These gear boxes greatly reduce the need of the operator. To detect the pressure of any fluid in the engine, automatic gear boxes use a proper hydraulic system. Also, automatic gear boxes use a converter to convert the torque.
Each gear box is made with a particular purpose and each is designed to provide specific level of force. There are different types of gear boxes specialized for various industries, such as paper, mining, agriculture, aerospace, pulp and auto-manufacturing. Helical, worm, spur and ground gear boxes are used for many different industrial purposes. For heavy-duties, hardened and ground gear boxes are most suitable.
In order to be able to last for many years, gear boxes are made from heavy-duty and highly-resistant materials, such as stainless steel, titanium and nickel. Bronze, steel and cast iron are good alternatives for gear boxes with cut teeth. To reduce the noise from some gear boxes, non-metallic materials are used, such as nylon, paper, wood, etc.
As with any other piece of component or machinery, gear box maintenance is important. Gear boxes need to be checked on a regular basis and most gear boxes are very easy to maintain. The most important thing with gear boxes is to be lubricated regularly, so they will work smoothly and provide almost no noise during operation. Additionally, proper gear box lubrication reduces friction between the gear parts and extends their lives.
