THE MAZE RUNNER
By: James Dashner

Introduction to our Author

JAMES DASHNER is the author of the New York Times bestselling Maze Runner series, as well as the Mortality Doctrine series, the 13th Reality series, and two books in the Infinity Ring series; A Munity in Time and The Iron Empire. He was born and raised in Georgia but now lives and writes in the Rocky Mountains.

Character

The Protagonist is a boy named Thomas. Thomas is about 16 years old and wakes up in a lift with no memory of anything except for his name. Thomas doesn't really fit in around The Glade because he's the "Greenbean" (The Newbie) and when he tries to fit in with everybody else they find someway to bring him down even though he has a thought of making it out.

Conflict

Thomas has to figure out how to save everyone and get out THE GLADE but that's hard to do when you have amnesia. Thomas also had to get through all the battles he had with other characters. I really think it was hard for Thomas to gain everybody's trust because he was the new guy and many people int he story have declared that they have seen him while they went through "THE CHANGING".

Setting

This book takes place in a simulator. In the simulator, the characters live in a place called "The Glade". In The Glade there aren't to many places for the people to live. They kinda live in a dystopian society because if they make the wrong choice, there are consequences, plus they don't really have choices everything is planned out for them.

PLOT

Thomas arrives in a place known as The Glade, with no memories of his past life except of his name. He meets other teenage boys calling themselves Gladers who have made a community in which each is assigned to a task in different departments headed by a Keeper.A gigantic maze surrounds the Glade and inside are mechanical creatures called Grievers that roam around at night. Huge doors around the Glade leading into the maze close at sunset. Supplies arrive every week and a new boy is sent once every month in an elevator called "the Box," It is the same elevator Thomas arrived in. There are also Beetle Blades, a mechanical bug to spy on the Gladers, on which the word "WICKED" is written.

THEME

Persistence

Despite having been imprisoned in the Glade for two years, the Gladers have not given up on trying to solve the Maze. Not trying to solve it would mean giving up and moving to a sense of hopelessness. Though the task may come to feel pointless, they continue to persevere.

Bravery

Thomas must call on his own will and fortitude to overcome a frightening situation. When he sees Minho and Alby struggling to return to the Glade before the Wall closes, he rushes out to help them. After that, it is his quick thinking and unwillingness to give up that saves his own life as well as Alby's.
