Spindletop all started when an eager oil company, Gladys City Oil, decided to drill on the Texas Coastal Plains. The faced drilling through hundreds of feet of sand instead of the usual rock. They were unsuccessful for 2 frustrating months. Then they struck "black gold"! It produced nearly 100,000 barrels a day.

If you go to Spindletop, make sure you stop by the Gladys City Museum. You can learn all aboout the oil boom. It tells you everything you want to know about the famous oil gusher on Spindletop Hill!
