History: Since opening its doors as the Texas State School of Mines in 1914. Then in 1967 it became as what we now know as the University of Texas El Paso. In the beginning UTEP only had 27 students. UTEP has had higher education in one of the largest bilingual places in the world.Over the past century, the University’s enrollment has grown from 27 mining students to more than 23,000 undergraduate and graduate students, and that number continues to increase each year. UTEP is on the hills an can see Mexico from there. It is basically on the border.

The College of Engineering pays annual homage to Saint Patrick, patron saint of engineers. Students majoring in mining or engineering engage in a variety of tasks throughout the day such as painting green lines and whitewashing the M, perpetuating the oldest continuous tradition at UTEP. Biomedical engineers study possible applications of new materials for use as new body parts.They analyze and design solutions to problems in biology and medicine.
Biomedical engineers typically do the following:
- Design systems and products, such as artificial internal organs, artificial devices that replace body parts, and machines for diagnosing medical problems
- Install, adjust, maintain, repair, or provide technical support for biomedical equipment
- Evaluate the safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of biomedical equipment
- Train clinicians and other personnel on the proper use of equipment
- Work with life scientists, chemists, and medical scientists to research the engineering aspects of biological systems of humans and animals
Biomedical engineers must be able to analyze the needs of patients and customers to design appropriate solutions.
Communication skills. Because biomedical engineers sometimes work with patients and frequently work with medical scientists or other engineers, they must be able to express themselves clearly.
Listening skills. Biomedical engineers often work in teams and gather input from patients, therapists, physicians, and business professionals. They must seek others’ ideas and incorporate them into the problem-solving process.
Math skills. Biomedical engineers use the principles of calculus and other advanced topics in mathematics for analysis, design, and troubleshooting in their work.
Problem-solving skills. Biomedical engineers typically deal with and solve problems in complex biological systems.

I have been in organizations such as an amazing organization for Engineers called the “National Society of Professional Engineers” (NSPE).
Ever since I was able to think. I would always have ideas and inventions on how to make the world better to live in. I have had many ideas where I think of them and years later somebody is making millions of dollars with the same inventions I thought would change the world. In my four years of high school I had an Engineering class. At the first moments of being in that class, I knew that I wanted to be an engineer and change the world with my ideas. I wanted to make a difference in the world.
In my first year of high school I had an amazing idea for an idea that could have great changes for life in today's society. I didn't know exactly what you would do with this idea but I know that it will be great. The idea was to create something such as a nanobot that could be smaller than an atom that would connect with other nanobot and would create anything you need. With these you could create anything from a tiny robot for medical treatment to a simple chair for a party. I thought of this to function just like an atom by connecting itself to other of the same and to look like an HIV virus. It would have a sphere in the middle that would be the control of the nanobot and from there would have thousands of little arms all over the surface. On a be end of each of the arms they would have little grabbers that would grab on to the other grabers of other nanobots.
The first time I told my idea to another person they told me I was crazy and that it would have no use in the world. I didn't listen and spent all day and night working on my idea. I calculated all the outcomes and every little detail about it. I talked to other people and other engineers about my idea and wanted their help on it. I did all I could to try and make my idea happen.
Later on I had a crazy I incidence with an idea I had. I had done a project on color blindness and had seen a way to possibly be able to cure it or make it better. I had spoken to another engineer about it and had told him about my idea. He then decided to work on it and found out years later that my idea was very close in technology to working.
I have always had a great interest in engineering especially engineering in medicine. It is a way to help people directly and find helpful new ways for people to be healthier and have better lives.
I still want to make a difference in the world and make great changes in this life. I wish
to create things that will change the medical field and to create amazing changes that I could achieve with being a Biomedical Engineer.
