The theory that has the best supporting evidence that explains what happened to the colonists at Roanoke is that hostile Spaniards captured them when the Spaniards came up from the south. In the selection Roanoke: The Big Fat Failure, it says, "...the constant threat of Spanish soldiers showing up and burning the place down, the colonists had enough of the New World experience and headed back to England." which proves that the Spaniards were a constant threat to the colonists at Roanoke. It also says that "...the country [England] in the middle of a bitter naval battle against the famous Spanish Armada."...the English won, which they did in 1588." The Spaniards could have easily have held a grudge against the English, and took it out on England that way.
