  1. amid- surrounded by; in the middle of
  2. bitter- having a sharp, pungent taste or smell; not sweet
  3. clasp- grasp (something) tightly with one's hand
  4. contagious- (of and emotion, feeling, or attitude) likely to spread to and affect others
  5. diverged- separated from another route
  6. nobler - having or showing fine personal qualities or high morals principles and ideals
  7. pitiless - showing no pity; cruel
  8. salvation - deliverance from sin and its consequences
  9. scolding - an angry rebuke or reprimand
  10. shatter - break or cause to break suddenly and violently into pieces
  11. temptation - a desire to do something, especially something wrong or unwise
  12. tormented - cause to experience severe mental or physical suffering
  13. treble - consisting of three parts; threefold
  14. trodden - walk in a specified way
  15. undergrowth - a dense growth of shrubs and other plants, especially under trees in woodland
