What is the Definition of Love?

(act 1 scene 5) In the scene Romeo flirts with Juliet and he tells her to kiss him. After they keep flirting; they finally kiss. Romeo says “O, then, dear saint, let lips do what hands do. They pray; grant thou, lest faith turn to despair.” Then Juliet says “Saints do not move, though grant for prayers' sake.”Then Romeo says “Then move not, while my prayer’s effect I take.” Romeo kisses her. “Thus from my lips, by thine, my sin is purged”. Shakespeare uses this in the story “Romeo and Juliet”because he wants show how Romeo quickly got over Rosaline and instantly fell in love with Juliet. He wants to show how people back in the days sometimes fell in love with others instantly.

(act 2 scene 2) In the scene that Romeo goes to Juliet’s balcony and talks to her proves that they are in love. I say this because he could have been hurt by her family yet he still showed up to her to prove his love. “By a name I know not how to tell thee who I am: My name, dear saint, is hateful to myself, because it is an enemy to thee; Had I it written, I would tear the word.” Not only had Romeo come to her house but he also sworn to her that he will stay in love with her. “Lady, by yonder blessed moon I swear That tips with silver all these fruit-tree tops-” to which she replies with “ O, swear not by the moon, the inconstant moon That monthly changes in her circled orb,Lest that thy love prove likewise variable”. Soon after they have come to an agreement on what to swear by and they fall in love.
In Act II, Scene 6 Shakespeare is trying to show the audience that people should only be married when they’re happy, when they love each other, and when they know there will be no regrets afterwards by having Friar Laurence say “So smile the heavens upon this holy act, That after hours with sorrow chide us not!” to Romeo. Shakespeare is having Romeo figure out whatever he can to make sure the marriage lasts long since they love each other. Romeo gives Juliet a scenario to think about so she can see what happiness they have together when they’re older. Shakespeare is trying to show that one should only be married when they are happy, when they love each other, and when they know there will be no regrets afterwards because in that time arranged marriages were how people were married. People were forced to marry each other when they didn’t know, or love the other, and when it was impossible to know if they will be happy or not after they’re married.

Symbol: A flower because lady Capulet and the nurse compare Paris to a flower. Meaning that it's so beautiful. Romeo is given a specific flower and Paris is just given a flower because it means that Paris isn't "the" flower that Juliet would prefer.

This is from the animated film Snow White after she had died from a poisonous apple that she was fed by a mean old witch. Once the prince found out, he went to her on her deathbed and kissed her causing her to basically come back from the dead. This describes the definition of love by showing that even after one is dead; they will still be loved and kissed by the person they love. The person she loves, and the man that loves her comes back to her once she is supposedly dead showing how much he truly loved and cared for her.

Snoopy is holding Woodstock and saying I love you proving anyone can love anyone no matter what type they are. Snoopy is a dog, and he loves a little birdy.

Modern Use:

The Notebook: The notebook is a good modern use because it shows how Noah and Allie weren’t allowed to date each other. Neither were Romeo and Juliet because their families had ancient feud and weren’t allow to date each other.

Love Story by Taylor Swift: Love Story by Taylor Swift is a song about love, and is based off of Romeo and Juliet. Taylor Swift sings the song while re-enacting various parts of the story Romeo and Juliet in a modern day version
