How did the pilgrims avoid the problems that Jamestown faced?

The pilgrims avoided the problems Jamestown faced by creating a colony, learning new techniques from the natives, and figuring out new survival skills. From The Great Migration section, it states that "As the colonies grew" it became easier for each new wave of immigrants to attract "More people, especially women and children."
