Famous American Cities
Just south of New York it’s Washington D.C, the Capital city of the United States of America.
It became the capital city of the United States of America in 1790.
George Washington, the first president of the U.S.A, gave his name to the city.
It’s still the centre of government today and some of the most important buildings in the country are here.
There is the White House, home of the President of the United States, and the Capitol building it’s the meeting place of the United States Congress.
Washington is a very historical city, there are lots of interesting things to see here, like the Washington Monument, there is the Supreme Court and the Lincoln Memorial.
Some of the worlds most famous cites are in United States of America. New York City is in The State of New York and it’s the biggest city in the USA. It has a population of over 8 million people. The city has 5 boroughs: Queens, Brooklyn, The Bronx, Staten Island and Manhattan.
Manhattan is one of the most famous boroughs. You often see it in films and many popular tourist attractions are here: there’s the Empire State Building, Time Square and Wall street, the centre for banks and businesses
New York is also one of American’s oldests cities.
In 1626 the Dutch bought the island from the Native Americans and called it New Amsterdam.
But in 1664 the English changed his name to New York. In the 1920s of the century lots of immigrants came to New York from Europe and Asia. Today there are big Chinese and Italian communities in the city, a lot of chinese people live here in Chinatown and many Italians live here in Little Italy.
Miami is in Florida on the SouthEast coast of the country. It's very different to both New York and Washington.
A lot of people say Miami is more like a Latin American city and it’s easy to see why.
Over half the population of Miami was born outside of the USA and most people here speak Spanish as their first language
It’s over two thousand kilometers north west of Miami, and it doesn’t have a very warm climate because of strong winds blowing from the prairies.
In fact people call Chicago the ‘windy city’, but Chicago is also very popular with tourists. They come here to see Lake Michigan.
