September 2, 1945

Ho Chi Minh(pictured) declares Vietnam an independent nation, and calls it the "Democratic Republic of Vietnam".

July 1950 - May 7, 1954

The US give France fifteen million dollars to help fight their battles in Vietnam, in order to stop the spread of communism and re-gain occupation. On May 7, 1954, the French suffer a large losss at the battle of Dien Bien Phu to the Vietnamese.

July 24, 1954

The Geneva Accords creates the 7th parallel between North and South Vietnam, and calls for a cease-fire with all French forces.

August 2, 1964

The North Viernamese attack two US ships who were stationed in the international waters. This incident is known as the Gulf of Tonkin Incident.

March 16, 1968

The US begin airstrikes on North Vietnam, and kill hundreds of civilians in the city Mai Lai.
