Description Paragraph
Early Life: Background & Education

Walter Elias Disney, born on Dec. 5, 1901, in Chicago, Ill., was the fourth of five children.  In 1906, Disney’s family moved to a farm near Marceline, Mo. That was when Disney began to draw; his first sketches were of the farm animals. In 1910, the family moved to Kansas City, Mo., where Walt Disney got his first job as an artist. He did weekly sketches for a barber, for which he received either 25 cents or a haircut. In 1917, the family returned to Chicago, where Walt Disney attended McKinley High School, and studied drawing in the evening at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. He went to high school, but became a drop-out. He became the Red Cross ambulance driver in World War 1. After the war, Walt Disney returned to Kansas City and worked as an artist with an advertising company. During this time he made his first animated cartoons, Laugh-O-Grams.

Cause/Effect Paragraph
Disney Movies: Childhood Imaginations and Dreams

Walt Disney introduces each of the seven dwarfs.

Over the past years, Walt Disney and the fellow co-workers of his company have worked their hardest to create the special movies we enjoy watching today; with our friends and family. In 1923, Walt Disney had decided his future lay in Hollywood with the film industry. He formed a partnership with his brother Roy, and produced the Alice Comedies series. Steamboat Willie, the first cartoon to use synchronized sound, appeared in 1928. It starred a new personality, Mickey Mouse. Within the next 10 years Mickey and his fellow characters Minnie Mouse, Pluto the dog, and Donald Duck became world famous. Disney’s first full-length film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, was released in 1937. Seal Island (which was made in 1948) was the first of Disney’s True-Life Adventures, featuring real wildlife. He also made films such as Mary Poppins that used human actors. Disney won more than 100 prizes for his films, including 29 Academy awards. In 1964, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. His films, which include Fantasia, The Aristocats, and Bambi, are released periodically. Disney’s films have been released in many languages and are shown around the world.

Two Extraordinary Things

Walt Disney with Mickey Mouse at the Disneyland parade in August of 1966.

In 1955, Walt Disney opened a large themed amusement park, Disneyland, in Anaheim California. It is the only theme park designed and built under the direct supervision of Disney. Walt Disney came up with Disneyland after visiting many amusement parks with his daughters in the 1930's and 1940's. Disneyland has a larger amount of people attending than any other theme park in the world, with over 650 million guests since it opened. In 2013 the park hosted 16.2 million guests, making it the third most-visited amusement park of the year. In 1966, Disney was diagnosed with lung cancer. He died on December 15, 1966, at the age of 65. Disney was cremated, and his ashes interred at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Los Angeles, California. Five years after Walt Disney’s death, another themed park Walt Disney World opened near Orlando, Florida.
