Hugo Chavez

Hugo Chavez was born in Sabaneta, Venezuela on July 28, 1954 to Hugo de los Reyes Chavez and Elena Frias de Chavez. He the second of seven children. Hugo died on March 5, 2013 in Caracas, Venezuela. He was the President of Venezuela from February 2, 1999 - March 5, 2013.

President Chavez

Hugo Chavez was elected president on February 2, 1999. During his first year his approval rating reach 80 percent. Hugo supported the socialist political party and was the leader of The Fifth Republican Movement from 1997-2007 and the United Socialist Party of Venezuela until 2012.

Goals of Hugo Chavez

During Hugo Chavez's first year his priorities were to end corruption, increase spending on social programs, and redistribute the country's oil wealth. Hugo ruled until 2000 where he was then reelected to another six-year term. During his reelection Hugo tried to gain full power and control but his party fell short of the two-thirds needed for full power. In December 2006 Hugo was elected for his third term with 63 percent of the vote. During his third term Hugo became more vocal in his anti-American rhetoric speeches about George w. Bush. He also sponsored a package of changes to the Venezuela constitution.

Foreign Policies

Hugo Chavez strongly disagreed with all of the Unites States policies. He felt that they were wrong and should be changed. Hugo believed that George W. Bush was ¨the devil¨ he disagreed with everything he said and he thought that the podium that he spoke from was cursed. Hugo's polices included those with United States-Venezuela relations and Venezuela's relations with other countries.

Hugo in the Military

A current event that relates to Hugo Chavez was on February 4, 1992 Hugo, and a group of military officers led an attempt to overthrow the government of Pres. Unfortunately the rebellion collapsed. Hugo eventually surrendered and was imprisoned without court ruling until 1994. Also on September 26, 2009 Hugo called President Bush ¨the devil¨ in front of the United National General Assembly. He said that Bush stood right where he was and that it smelt like sulfur.
