Australia geography

Australia is an island in the south east of Asia. The Surface of Australia is 7,692,024 km2. It is 14 times bigger than France and it is the 6th largest country in the world. Australia is the only continent with over 10.000 beaches. The great Barrier reef is the world's largest living structure. It is the world's smallest and flattest continent.

The population lives within 50 km of the coast.

The Australian capital is Canberra. Canberra is situated in the south east of Australia. Canberra has 356 585 inhabitants. The biggest cities are situated on the south east coast.

The Outback is a vast , dry area in the center of Australia. In the outback , We can find kangoroos and dingos and red rocks.

In Australia the seasons are reversed. When it's summer in france, It's winter in Australia and vice-versa. Anyway the winter is never very cold. The greaterest part of the continent is desert or semi-arid. Only the south-east and south-west corners have a temparate climate and moderately fertile soil. The northern part has a tropical climate.

The Australian flag is blue red and white, with the Union Jack. It represents the British flag and six white stars for the six states: Queensland, Western Australia, Tasmania, South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria.
