Olympic Project - Speed Skating
Michael Johnson and Alex Spangles, 2/7/2014, Block 5
Equipment: Armbands, Blade, Glasses, Clap-Skate, Racing Suit
*Armbands: The skaters wear different colored armbands which are tell the officials and spectators if there in the inner ring or outer ring, Skaters in the outer lane wear a red armband and skaters in the inner land wear a white armband.
*Blade: The part of the blade that touches the ice forms a straight line. Men's speed skating blades are usually 42-46 cm long. The longer the blade, the faster the skate up to the point where its too hard to control. The underside of the blade is only about 1mm thick.
*Glasses: Skaters wear glasses to protect their eyes from the wind and ice chips. The lens reduces glare and improves sight of the track.
*Clap-Skate: The heel of the clap-skate blade is not attached to the skate, and the toe of the blade is attached to the skate with a hinged apparatus. At the end of each stride, as the skater picks up the skate, the blade briefly disconnects from the heel of the boot, keeping the skate on the ice longer making him go faster. When the blade has fully extends it makes a clapping sound which gives it it’s name.
*Racing Suit: Skaters wear skin-tight racing suits with hoods to decrease air resistance. Racing suits must match the skaters body. Any changing of the suit is not permitted.
