ACT I Scene 1
SETTING: We are in the living room of the Bryan home, a luxurious home in a residential area of Spring Hope, North Carolina. The room is filled with
expensive paintings and art pieces. A young boy is running in the room playing hide and seek behind the furniture. A teenage boy is texting on his cell phone. Suddenly , a loud noise is heard and the young boy looks at the floor in horror.
You know that you are not allowed to run in the Living room. Now look at what you have done. (OWEN looks down at pieces of the vase on the wooden floor.)
You broke that vase and now we are both in trouble.
(Boy is crying.)
I am so sorry, it was just having fun!
(Foot steps are heard coming down the hallway)
What is going on in there? Did I hear something break?
(DAVID enters room and sees the broken
vase pieces on the floor.) He has a frustrated and mad look on his face says in a firm voice)
Owen, I need to talk to you.
(OWEN walks over to where DAVID is standing) Owen you will have to pay for the $500 vase. You were responsible for watching over my son. I will deduct it from your pay. Your pay is $1,000 a month I will subtract the $500 from your monthly pay.
(OWEN thinks quickly)
I saw a vase just like the one that broke and I will replace the vase instead of deducting the money from my monthly pay.
(OWEN exits quickly and DAVID begins to clean up the broken vase. OWEN returns shortly.)
(OWEN walks quickly back into the room with an excited voice says)
"I found the exact vase so everything is fixed."
(DAVID looks over the vase and
sees a replica tag on the vase.)
(Angrily DAVID looks at OWEN.)
"You lied to me, this is a fake. Why did you try to cheat me after all that I have done for you?"
(Faces DAVID and with confidence says.)
"You were going to cheat me after all that I have done for you."
(Faces OWEN and harshly says)
"You should not have lied and now you are fired! I can not trust you. You will
be paid the $1,000 a month minus the $500 for the vase."
(OWEN takes the money and leaves the room shaking his head in disbelief and frustration.)
(In the background CHRIS is playing outside in the yard with another babysitter)
(BLACKOUT) (END OF SCENE)
