are well known forms of Japanese poetry in the West and they are like for their simplicity and brevity. Short Japanese lyrical poems or "uta" were first used as pre-Buddhist ceremonial rituals and the first subjects they were about were prayers, celebrations, formal eulogies, courting, planting, and harvesting. The most popular form of this was "waka", in which had 31 phonetic units broken into 5 lines in a 5-7-5-7-7 count, then later it became known as the "tanka."
